Filter Press - Longer Legs and Sludge Disposal Chute

Longer Legs and Sludge Disposal Chute for Filter Presses

Automatic filter press built on a catwalk with sludge disposal chute.
Met-Chem can provide longer legs and a disposal chute on your new filter press.  This is especially useful if you are releasing the sludge from the press into a sludge bag or a drum.  The chute will direct the sludge directly into your container.  If you plan to use a sludge disposal bag, we can add hooks to the chute so that the sludge bag can be hung from the frame of the press.
For some larger presses, we can build a catwalk along with the disposal chute in order to accommodate a roll-off container.
Since we design and manufacture all of our own equipment, we can adapt to meet your specifications

How does a clarifier work?

A Met-Chem clarifier uses a parallel plate design.  Water is fed into the inlet trough of the flocculation tank.  The wastewater and polymer flocculant are introduced simultaneously in the flocculation mixing chamber, if that option is selected.  The flocculated water then flows over the first baffle, then under the second and finally flows to the body of the clarifier.  The overflow/underflow allows time for the solids to gain size so that they settle out more easily.  The wastewater is then directed to the bottom of the cone and back up through the plate pack.  Some solids will settle as the waste stream makes its way to the clarifier cone.  However, some particulate will be pushed up to the plate packs.  The 60 degree angle of the plates provides a highly effective settling area in a small footprint.  As some solids are forced up to the plate pack they start to settle upon each other gradually becoming heavier and ultimately slide down the plate pack to the clarifier cone.  The clean water overflows from the effluent port and is suitable to proceed to the drain to city sewer or to an inspection tank.  Sometimes a portion or all can be polished and reused.  The clarifier sludge is then pumped from the bottom of the clarifier into a sludge thickening tank to feed a Met-Chem filter press.

Auto Technology Company’s customers also included many auto-related suppliers such as Delphi, Visteon, Siemens, Valeo, Magni, Henkel, Borg Warner and many others.

Our customers are not limited to the automotive industry. Many diverse industries use our equipment to test components and finished products. Leading companies such as, Carrier, Boeing, Kohler, Lennox, Masco, NASA, TRW, Underwriters Laboratories, the US Armed Forces, and the US Post Office to name a few.

Wastewater Reduction & Dragout Recovery

The EVAPORATIVE TANK™, patented by Poly Products is the ideal solution for wastewater reduction. It is free of complicated machinery and chemistry and was originally developed as a cost-saving means of recovering valuable dragout but is now the go-to solution for many wastewater reduction projects. Our plating customers have doubled their benefits by using the EVAPORATIVE TANK™ for E.P.A. compliance and discovering dramatic savings in their waste treatment costs. The EVAPORATIVE TANK™ has also found new uses in the anodizing, painting, photographic, machining, chemical and other fields. This proven, simple and inexpensive system of recovery and reduction can pay for itself in as little as 30 days.
Met-Chem Clarifiers
Clarifiers for wastewater treatment, manufactured by Met-Chem are the inclined parallel plate design that are used as part of a wastewater treatment system for solids settling.  They are constructed of carbon steel with coal tar epoxy lining on the inside, and epoxy coating on the exterior. The internal plate packs are set at 60 degrees for optimum settling and are constructed of a coal tar epoxy-coated steel shell with plastic plates.

A Turnkey Solution for a Unique Situation

The old filter press was removed from the building and placed out of the way by two large cranes.

Duke Energy contacted us with a request to analyze their current water filtration issues. There setup consisted of a 140 cu.ft. Sperry filter press suspended 16 feet over a trailer inside a closed building. This set up allowed them to collect water from the Muskingum River, process it and filter it through the filter press for easy “sludge elimination”. When the trailer was full a truck could easily drive off with it and a new trailer installed to take its place.  The system had to be enclosed to ensure the sludge did not freeze solid in the trailer.

Although the setup was a great design, the filter press was not working properly. Upon inspection we determined it had severe deflection when pressure was added to the press. This caused visible bending and arching of the Filter Press side bars. It was also noted that every time the pumps engaged to fill the Filter Press the entire building moved.

Turning water into Gold

Tailing ponds are not environmentally friendly... However this is how Gold Mining traditionally deals with the slushy extra waste materials they generate. Another problem is the tailings usually contain about 10-20% of the economic minerals that could not be recovered from the ore. These ponds have historically provided an important water source for mine operations. However, getting rid of the tailing pond would also get rid of a viable water source for the mine.
The first step was to dewater the gold concentrate. Met-Chem used a 1200mm filter press, allowing the excess gold to be sent to the smelter.

The next step was to eliminate the tailing pond by using another 1500MM filter press to dewater the tailings. The solids that were recovered could be sent back to the mines to fill old mine shafts. This allowed the mine to return 100% or the tailing back underground where they belong!

Filter Presses

MetChem filter presses have been used in a variety of industries from plating and metal finishing to chemical and food processing to name a few. Their Filter Presses feature heavy duty steel construction with polypro gasketed plates. These filter presses can be manufactured with manual or automatic closures, but always with a hydraulic cylinder for sure, high pressure closing. Met-Chem’s filter presses can be expanded for larger future capacity by building it in a larger skeleton with a distance piece. Once you are ready to expand, you can remove the distance piece and add the extra plates.

Filter Press Pumps that can handle the slurry

Filter Press Diaphragm Pumps

Filter Press Diaphragm Pumps
Diaphragm pump mounted to filter press manifold and catwalk.

Air operated diaphragm pumps are used with filter presses to pump sludge from the bottom of the sludge holding tank into the filter press.  These pumps are ideal because they can handle the slurry which is generally about the consistency of a milkshake.

The diaphragm pump usually starts out slowly and gradually ramps up.  Once the pump starts to slow back down, (30-60 seconds between thrusts), it is usually an indicator that the filter press is full.  At this point the feed pump should be turned off and the valves on the filter press closed as the operator prepares to operate the air-blow-down process.

The diaphragm pump can be manually turned up or an Automatic Pump Control system may be added.  This starts the pump at 25 psi, then moves up to 50, 75 and finally 100 psi which is standard operating pressure for the pump.

Met-Chem provides diaphragm pumps in the following sizes:  1”, 1.5”, 2” and 3”.  Material of construction ranges from cast iron, aluminum, polypro or stainless steel.

With the purchase of a new Met-Chem filter press Met-Chem can mount your air operated diaphragm pump to the legs of your filter press.  This option also includes a flex hose that connects the outlet of the diaphragm pump to the center feed pipe, an air filter, a regulator, and an oiler.   We can also provide a mounted diaphragm pump for your existing press.
